Canyon County Historical Society Monthly Meeting February 26, 2008

The general monthly meeting, open to the public as well as members, was held at the Nampa Valley Grange on Tuesday on February 26th and was  attended by 58 members. New president Sonia Martin opened the meeting at 11:30 AM and handled some quick business matters, including introducing those directors in attendance.  The meeting was then turned over to acknowledging outgoing president Pati Sweet, who deflected the adulations. Pati became the volunteer coordinator in 1999, secretary in 2000 and president in 2003.  She has deftly led the growing Historical Society to the organization it is now and is greatly appreciated for her time, talents, and efforts of the past 10 years.

Guest speakers were clock collectors Glen Chambers and Ira Goldstein.  Glen and Ira belong to the Idahorological Chapter 153,  of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors.

  Ira Goldstein and Glen Chambers

Glen and Mike Thessen had approached Director Wendy Miller late last year about cataloging and reviewing the clock collection at Our Memories Indian Creek Museum. They had just recently completed that project, and planned on presenting their findings at this month's general meeting. However, Mike died unexpectedly. (May he rest in peace.)

Glen  brought the current president of their chapter, Ira, Goldstein, who has an extensive collection of railroad pocket watches.  To a most attentive and interested group, he told a bit of their findings and their interest in clocks.  Ira was quick to point out that few young people are coming into the trade, not having the public interest that high tech jobs get. However, there are many who are thrilled with the trade, and there is a great need for watch makers and repairers.

Archie Gulley emphasizing a point about originally acquiring the clock collection at Our Memories Indian Creek Museum while Opal Gulley listens.
