OCTOBER 27TH GENERAL MEETING  - 1 PM

"Brewed in Idaho"

Join the Canyon County Historical Society's open general meeting this month at

the Nampa Train Depot Museum.

Guest speaker will be Herman Ronnenberg, a retired educator who has written many articles on brewing in the "Inland Northwest" .  He will speak about the brewing industry in Idaho.  His visit will coincide with the opening of a new exhibit titled "Jacob Lockman and the Crescent Brewery in Nampa, Idaho" which displays products and pictures of the famed brewery which stood just blocks from the depot.  Mr. Ronnenberg will also discuss prohibition in Idaho and its effect on local industries.  Refreshments will be served (sorry... the closest thing to beer which we can serve is rootbeer...)

Space is limited. Please call the CCHS office beforehand to secure a seat!

LIVING HISTORY PRESENTATION AT THE AT THE NAMPA TRAIN DEPOT MUSEUM

The Tyner family visited the Nampa Train Depot Museum  on Saturday, August 15th to present the stories of early pioneers.  The Tyners perform as historical characters each telling the story of a different person in history.  They touch on everything from the fur traders and trappers all the way through the homesteader period.

Their visit coincided with the Museum’s construction of a new exhibit nearing completion.  “Rivers, Trails and Rails” a Canyon County timeline, covers the development of the county from 12,000 years ago to the present.

Michael Tyner is shown here as Francois Payette instructing his employee Philippe LeClerc

The Society is considering an SUV/Car Tour of The Goodale 1863 Variant

Saturday, September 12, 2009

Many wagon trains crossed the southern part of Idaho on the Oregon Trail during the mid 1840-50s making their way to Oregon. Some crossed at Three Island area near Glenn Falls, and traveled through the Boise area and west to ford the Snake River near Fort Boise. Other trains traveled along the southern edge of the Snake River never crossing it, and meeting the main trail again west of the Fort Boise site. (This was known as the South Alternate Route).

After 1862 many trains crossed the Boise River and went northwest, as Tim Goodale did in opening a new route, leading people through the valley past Emmett, to the Payette area, and northeast to the Cambridge Valley. (Then the trail went over the hills to the Brownlee Ferry, and to Oregon.) Later part of Highway 95 covered Tim's original trail. Mainly because of the difficult Midvale Hill only a small number of emigrants followed all of that route.

The 1863 variant going north from Emmett through the Crane Creek area replaced the Midvale Hill part of Goodale's Cutoff. This alternate route was opened up by miners within six months of the Goodale trail, doing much extra trail building, and connecting to Tim's original trail south of the Little Weiser River near Dixie Creek. This became the primary route for many emigrant trains for almost 25 years, miner's also traveling both ways, pack trains, freight wagon haulers, and by the 1870s family vehicles on the first Idaho busy north-south road.

It is the 1863 Variant we are considering taking in September as a guided, private vehicle caravan tour, with radio communications as possible. This will provide access to and follow many miles of the old, still-existing trail. It will be an all day adventure.  Please contact the Canyon County Historical Society's office at 208-467-7611 if you are interested in participating.  Tickets are anticipated to be $15 for CCHS members and $20 for non-members.

The Dodd-Whiffin Homestead was one  of the historical sites visited during the Fall Home Tour on October 13, 2007.  Participants were thrilled to see how the outbuildings have not been remodeled or removed. Above one of the Whiffin family is showing this group the artesian well house .

The Obendorf barn is a 1915 Sear's "kit" and quite unique in this part of the country.  The styling is known as a   "gothic-arch" barn. Below are pictures of the inside of the barn.

The present owner, the Culps, have created a museum inside the barn and love visitors.  The place is beautifully kept up,  has 5 red tractors and lots of smaller farm items on display.  We even had produce sent along with us!  The picture just above is in the loft area above where a huge amount of hay could be stored with four access holes to the lower area.  Not one piece of wood is longer than 8 feet long!

THE MISSION OF THE CANYON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The purpose of this Society shall be to help investigate and preserve for future generations any kind of historical records, documents, sites, buildings, articles and artifacts, pertaining to Canyon County and to promote interest and concern for Canyon County history.  To bring together those people interested in this history and promote better understanding of our state and nation, plus a better appreciation of our American heritage.

Remembering the Dewey Palace Hotel

Canyon County has a rich heritage, from the Oregon Trail to the Iron Rails and everything in between.   Gone is a wonderful hotel which graced downtown Nampa in the early 1900's and was a visiting place for locals and out-of-towners. Below are scenes from the Dewey Palace Exhibit which we have left here for awhile for you to enjoy:

The Dewey Palace Hotel  spanned the length of one block located between 11th Avenue S. & 12th Avenue S. on Ist Street S.  Just one block from where the Nampa Depot Museum still stands thanks to the Canyon County Historical Society which saved the depot from destruction.  Sadly, the Dewey Palace Hotel was not so lucky.  Many think the hotel would be a great attraction to the city if it were still standing. In its place is now a tire shop and a bank.

A view from Ist Avenue south looking south westward.  Wells Fargo Bank stands on this corner now.  (The water tower in the background was for servicing the guests, the restaurant and the steam laundry.) The hotel faced the Nampa Train Depot Station.

2007 Annual Fall Tour on October 13th was indeed a moving event!

The Canyon County Historical Society typically sponsors an annual fall tour.  In past years, Caldwell or Nampa residents have opened their houses to the public as part of walking tours. However, this year,  tour participants went to various historical sites throughout Canyon County.

On Saturday, October 13, 2007, participants gathered at the Nampa Train Depot to board two busses which transport them to a variety of historical locations

Sites visited:

the Alexander Duffes Home

Kohlerlawn Cemetery

The old Canyon County Poor Farm

The Swartz German Prisoner of War Camp

Dodd-Whiffin Homestead

1893 John Thomas barn

Ward Massacre Park

Original Site of the Old Fort Boise

Sears "kit" gothic-arch style barn

Roswell Mercantile

and more

A narrated tour and booklet entertained and educated guests along the way. The Oregon Trail was highlighted as the busses traveled along its route from the Perry gravesite, the Ward Massacre site, and two Fort Boise sites.  Lunch was held in Roswell at the Sperry Memorial Presbyterian Church, another historic site.

Booklets of the tour will be available at the Nampa Train Depot Gift Shop and at Our Memories Indian Creek Museum's gift shop.  Although people won't have the informative tour guide's insights, much history is included in the booklets as well as driving directions. History buffs are encouraged to make the tour themselves!

Preservation  Through the generosity of former and current residents of Canyon County,  we are able to preserve artifacts from our history.  Many donations come in almost daily, and each one has a story to tell.

Interpretation  Through various exhibits, which are changed throughout the year, we are able to make the past alive for our visitors.  Tour guides are available daily to take you on a journey in time.

Education  Through special group and general tours, we are able to educate our visitors about the way we lived, played, worked, and functioned as a society.

The Depot Train museum in Nampa, recently hosted the GSE (Group and Study Exchange) five member group from England which is presently traveling throughout the United States on its 2007 tour.

Wendy Miller, Director and Curator of the Canyon County Historical Society is shown  (on the left) with the group in front of the Depot Museum after taking them on a private tour through the museum.  Members of the group are particularly interested in American museums, especially those regarding rail transportation. The Sunshine Rotarian Group hosted their visit to Nampa, Idaho.
